Alagoas Trip Report - Feb, 2005

Nearby Destruction

We observed this fire on the night of 17 Feb. While possibly natural, fires like these pose a threat to nearby forested areas and bird habitats. They could be minimized by reestablishing the natural balance of the ecosystem.

A felled Mulungu and the bromeliads it supported.

These trees are close to Cachoeira and are more than 50 years old.

As can be seen, the felling was done by hand.

This destruction is due to ignorance and can only be stopped by a lengthly education process - which could take years - or by acquiring the land and prohibiting the felling of trees.
