Alagoas Trip Report - Feb, 2005

Side Trip to a Local Reserve

IBAMA MaceioOn the 15th, and on our way to the research site, we stopped off for a visit to a private reserve and breeding center at one of the many sugar plantations in the area. We got to see many birds there, some vary rare, like the Alagoas Curassow (Mitu mitu) which is extinct in the wild.

Many usinas in the area have established private reserves on their land – in an effort to guarantee water supplies for irrigation of the sugar cane. While the interests of conservationists and local industry often are at odds, in this instance there is a coincidence of objectives – to save the forest.
